Seen from about 6 billion kilometers, Earth appears as a tiny dot
(the blueish-white speck approximately halfway down the brown band to the right)
within the darkness of deep space.

Sagan pointed out that "all of human history has happened on that tiny pixel," shown here inside a blue circle,
"which is our only home" (speech at Cornell University, October 13, 1994).

Carl Edward Sagan (Cornell University, Harvard University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, University of California, Berkeley; November 9, 1934 – December 20, 1996) was an American astronomer, cosmologist, astrophysicist, astrobiologist, author, science popularizer, and science communicator in astronomy and other natural sciences.
